Feline Behaviour Consultations Special Understanding for Cats
Miriam is one of those extra special vets who just “get” cats. She has been a member of the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) for over a decade, and in 2021 she completed an additional two year advanced professional development course through ISFM and the University of Sydney in Feline Medicine. She spent three years working exclusively with cats, and they are always her favourite patients (just don’t tell the dogs or horses!).
Cats are special, and need special understanding. Behavioural problems can be complex, and often involve careful examination of the environment. Many cats with chronic or painful conditions also have a behavioural/psychological element of disease which can be hard to assess in a veterinary practice setting. Miriam can provide excellent evidence-based advice about a variety of behavioural issues, and help you find practical ways to implement the advice in your home.
Just like with our integrated care veterinary assessment, we work alongside your primary care veterinary practice to ensure we have the whole picture, and to make sure any recommendations or treatments are safe. Our first step is to request a referral from your primary care vet. They will then send us a full medical history which we will review. We need to know why you would like a consultation with us for the referral request.
You can then book an appointment for Miriam to visit you in your home. Behaviour consultations typically last around one hour and involve observing your cat in their home environment, as well as a physical exam including mobility and pain assessment. You may be asked to take some videos prior to the examination. Miriam will discuss her findings, make recommendations and discuss when a follow up appointment would be appropriate. Recommendations may include environmental modifications, further testing at your primary care vet, medications (such as analgesics), or herbal medicines. After the consultation you and your primary care vet will receive a detailed written report.
